End of An Era: Oscar de la Renta

October 20, 2014. A solemn day is the world of fashion as we bid farewell to a beloved designer: Oscar de la Renta. A native Dominican, de la Renta was renowned for “reshap[ing] the public image of first ladies, society muses and red-carpet regulars with grand evening wear that celebrated Latin sensuality, European refinement and American versatility” (The Washington Post).
From the White House to the red carpet, de la Renta’s gowns constantly appear at extravagant events. With his eye for color, shape and silhouette, de la Renta never failed to deliver exactly what women wanted at that moment. In addition to his breathtaking garments, de la Renta will leave behind a memorable legacy, not only as a designer but as a person “As recounted in The Fashion Makers, a 1978 survey of U.S. designers,” de la Renta exclaimed: “I’ve lived every day to the fullest, and I’ve had a marvelous time. I’ve tried to be nice to the people I care about, and ignore the ones I don’t. I enjoy what I’ve done” (Washington Post). Oscar de la Renta thoroughly loved his career and the people with whom he worked. Although de la Renta himself has moved onto life after death with the fashion gods, his memory will remain; on the runway, red carpet, and beyond.
