The temperature in DC has finally dropped, so it is starting to actually feel like fall. And, in my opinion, one of the best things about this transitional season is the array of footwear. In summer, I seem to wear the same few pairs of sandals or wedges; and in winter, I tend to stick to warmer options— booties and boots. However, fall leaves more room for creativity with shoes—mules, loafers, and sneakers, among many other options.
Mules
Prone to blisters on your heel? Then mules are undoubtedly the shoe for you. Mules—“whether minimal or intricately detailed—are an easy slide-on shoe that are virtually painless” (Bonilla, 2019). Personally, I have just recently given mules a chance, and I am now hooked. Whether donning a pair of skinny jeans or a cropped trouser, mules complete any outfit. A bonus for the shoe—the are easily found in all sorts of colors, patterns and shapes with lots of unique details. Thus, you can certainly find a pair that is perfect for you!

Loafers
According to Fass (2019), “this borrowed-from-the-boys slip-on style is just flat enough to work as a very comfortable fall shoe option, perfect for all-day wear and even better to walk around in when enjoying all that the crisp and colorful season has to offer.” A little bit more of a secure fit than mules, loafers offer both utility and style for fall footwear. Although the shoe’s origins are certainly masculine or for the ultra-preppy female, the loafer is now widely accepted for numerous occasions and can be paired with several, unique outfits. Try loafers with a pair of tailored pants for the office or with a flirty maxi skirt for a casual Saturday.
Sneakers
Just about ten years ago, most people would not even consider wearing sneakers outside of purely athletic pursuits. Sure, the ‘fashion sneaker’ had yet to be conceived. Nowadays, sneakers are a staple is almost everyone’s closets. From Allbirds, Vans and Golden Goose to Adidas, Superga and Vintage Havanna, almost every retailer carries some form of fashion sneaker. “Whether you're seeking that head-turning accessory or prefer a more low-key way to dress down an otherwise party-ready look, sneakers are a great go-to,” says Matera (2019). Sneakers have a knack for making any outfit look a tad more cool and chic, so why not have a go-to pair in your closet!
